Born and raised in Maryland and a 1981 graduate of Goucher College, in 1998 Carol established her studio workshop on a cliff-side overlooking tranquil Mill Creek.
Inspired by the simple beauty found in nature and wildlife Carol turns Brazilian soapstone into artistic expressions of her vision.
The use of classic hand tools to turn exotically grained and textured stone into expressive shapes
and forms was initially passed to Carol from her artist mother, Kitty Dreyfus. Watching her mother
produce sculpture from the time she was a toddler, Carol has developed her own distinct style similar
to that of the Inuit Eskimos whose animal forms are created to capture the spirit and essence found in wildlife and nature.
Carol's work brings forth the "captive forms" she sees in each piece of stone. By choosing to bring-forth what is already naturally infused in a rock rather than trying to turn a rock into something, Carol instead strives to free the existing spirit within.
Pieces of her sculpture are currently on display at the World Bank and at The Circle Gallery Annapolis, Maryland.
Therapeutic sculpting classes are available by appointment. If you are interested in
learning to carve for artistic or therapeutic benefit, call Carol at 202-288-8882.
